Warren is Michigan's third-largest city and the industrial heart of Macomb County — home to the GM Technical Center and the Detroit Arsenal, and built out almost entirely in the postwar boom to house the people who worked there. That history put a very specific house on nearly every block: a compact 1950s brick ranch of roughly 900 to 1,200 square feet, one bathroom, a kitchen closed off from the living space, and a full basement underneath. Those basements are both the opportunity and the catch — finishing one nearly doubles the usable floor plan, but postwar framing left ceilings low, often around seven feet to the joists, so the room has to be laid out around the height that is actually there: mechanical runs rerouted, lighting kept tight, soffits placed deliberately rather than wherever the ductwork happens to fall.
